Since it’s a couple of weeks till my next show, I thought I’d just give a little rundown of what I have coming up in the next few months. I’m sure there will be more – and a couple of these may end up not happening (i.e. I don’t actually have tickets in hand yet) – but here’s what I’ve got on my calendar so far:
- Joshua Bell
- Victor Wooten Trio
- Joey Alexander (my mom’s favorite, so I’m taking her)
- Stevie Nicks & the Pretenders
- Wu Man
- Garry Tallent
- Buddy Guy
- Tom Petty
- Kris Kristofferson
- Four Voices (Indigo Girls, Joan Baez, & Mary-Chapin Carpenter)
- Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit & The Mountain Goats
As always, there are a few artists I’m hoping will tour – or whose tours I hope add a stop somewhere convenient enough for me to get to. I really love the new Ryan Adams album but St. Louis is his closest show as of now and that’s midweek, requiring two vacation days – so I’m holding out for something else.
Once the E Street Band gets back from Australia & New Zealand, Little Steven and Jake Clemons both may be touring (separately) with solo stuff, in addition to Garry Tallent’s already-announced solo shows, and Nils Lofgren will likely hit the road on his own for a bit as well. Any of those would be shows I’d travel for. Patti Scialfa is also working on a new album, I’ve heard, though who knows if she will tour behind it. I love her work so I would absolutely go see her if I could.
I went ahead and bought a ticket to see Jason Isbell in Cincinnati, but fully expect something closer later in the year – I like him enough to see him at least a couple times a year. I missed Amanda Shires’ short tour behind her newest album, so have an eye out for possible dates for her (besides her role in the 400 Unit). And I am always up for a Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes show, though their Chicago date this year conflicts with another show I already had a ticket for – sigh.
Lady Gaga is playing in Indy later this year – decent seats are pretty expensive and I’m not sure I need to see her THAT much, but I hear she puts on an amazing show and I wouldn’t put it past me to end up there.
Carrie Newcomer plays here in Bloomington most years, so I’ll probably have a chance to see her. And since I had to miss Bonnie Raitt’s Louisville show last year (had a very sick cat & wasn’t comfortable leaving him), I am really hoping for some dates from her. Finally I am eternally hoping for a return visit from Glen Hansard; I went to see him on a lark a couple years ago and that show remains a favorite memory.
Oh, there’s plenty of others I will go see given half a chance: Pearl Jam, Rhiannon Giddens (who is incredible live), Mavis Staples (a national treasure), so many more. It just depends on who hits the road and whose tour dates coincide with when and where I am able to be. No matter what I think it’s going to be a great year musically (if in no other way), despite the lack of any Springsteen/E Street shows.
